Dreamwidth has male, female, other, and rather not say as options to the gender field in the edit profile section. LiveJournal has no other option.

LiveJournal has a feature where other users can "nudge" you if you have not posted in 2 weeks. Dreamwidth has removed this feature.

LiveJournal uses Snap.com for contextual link popups and advertising. Dreamwidth has removed this, as users who like them can install the browser add ons.

THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER.

Dreamwidth has modified the code base to run on modern server software, such as Apache 2 instead of Apache 1.4, and done other needed clean up such as English stripping and code organization. Dreamwidth has also added features to its open source base such as invite codes, paid account support, and improved site schemes.

Someone should be able to create a main/parent/etc account and define other journals as alternates/children of that account. If you're logged in as the main account, you should be able to comment as/update as/manage settings for/etc any of the alternate accounts, preferably with inline AJAX that will reload/redraw things (so you have access to userpics, tags, etc) without having to load the Work As User menu and re-input your password

This sounds interesting, and useful to certain levels!

Draft posts:

Create a system by which people can store, save, manage, etc, entries as they write them, and "publish" (add to journal) them only when satisfied with their contents. It should be stored server-side, not client-side, and should support multiple draft posts at a time.

Scheduled posts:

You should be able to write an entry and schedule it for posting sometime in the future, and the post will appear in your journal at-or-near the specified time. You should also be able to schedule recurring posts: "post this text every Monday at noon", for instance.

I know quite a few people who are very excited about this feature, and I think it's a very useful functionality. I like this feature in Wordpress a lot.

Dreamwidth, with community feedback, is going to implement photo hosting that integrates well with the service.

After getting totally and utterly frustrated with the whole scrapbook feature on LJ I kinda just settled for off-site hosting (like I was used to anyway). But knowing that Dreamwidth would probably create something that DOES work and (as stated) integrates well with the service I am kind of unsure whether to vote neutral or +x for this one. :)

Overhaul "memories" bug:

To replace the Memories function with a new form of site-wide bookmarking, similar to the functionality of del.icio.us, in which users can tag other people's posts and assets for later retrieval. To track both how many times a specific entry is saved by someone else, allowing users to find the most popular or most-talked-about entries, and how recently an entry was posted and/or first tagged, allowing users to find the freshest content for a specific tag.

Users will also be able to bookmark comments and offsite links.

One of the reasons I use LJ and don't use del.icio.us is that I don't like the del.icio.us tagging system. I just don't find it intuitive - to the extent that losing the LJ-style Memories would probably be enough to make me keep LJ rather than DW as my main journal.

Right now many people do not like that messages that go to email cannot skip the inbox. While this is built into the system and can't be removed, we can improve the inbox filtering so that, for instance, comment notifications that go to your email could be automatically marked as read We also want to let you filter the inbox by which entry a comment was a reply to.

I am so looking forward to this.

Community maintainers have been begging for the ability to add LJ cuts to posts in their communities. We also feel that community maintainers should be able to increase the security level of a post--in case it is a friends only comm, for instance--or add NSFW or 18+ warnings, as part of their moderating abilities.

I am really excited for this.

You should be able to export your journal as a PDF, by the month or by the entire journal.

Now this, this I am extremely excited about. I'm on a Mac, and most of the LJ backup tools don't work for me. LJ Book has never been a satisfying alternative; I hate what they do (or did the last time I could make the server love me) with very long comment threads (nested, but squished up against the side if you cross onto a new page).

A poll poster (and anyone who is authorized to see the poll results) should be able to click a button and receive a CSV of poll responses: username,q1answer,q2answer,q3answer, etc.

*fantasizes about all that data to play with*

For me the most frustrating part of polls on lj is being unable to look at the poll data in a way that I can easily sort and filter to see correlations and trends and such. (Yes, I am an excel geek).

Create a user-to-user classified "marketplace" where people can choose to advertise their creative efforts/etc, along with accompanying feed-new-items-to-my-readlist options for people to subscribe to if they want.

From the bug:

Users should be able to create "archive pages" for their user-space, and when posting an entry, choose to send that entry to both the main journal page and the archive page. The update page will be changed to allow a short description of the entry. Archive pages will display as title of the entry + short description only, with the post title linked to the entry itself. A separate management page will allow users to move the entries up & down on the archive page in whatever order they'd like, as well as remove entries from the archive page, etc. Users can have more than one archive page in their user space at any given time.

Add killfile support to the service, wherein people can designate other people as "do not show me this user's content". This project includes:

* Two levels of killfile:

1). "collapse all content by this user, but still show me that the content exists", where any community entries, comments, etc by that user will just show as "[Post by username]" or "[Comment by username]" but can be clicked on to display the content if the user wishes, and

2). "never show me evidence that this user exists at all", where any community entries, comments, etc by that user will simply not be displayed. Level 2 killfile should also remove that username from profile pages you're viewing, although the profile should always include a note that people you have killfiled are members of the comm/trusted by the user/etc, along with a link that, if clicked, will display the usernames of which killfiled names have been removed. (This is to avoid someone not realizing that their mortal enemy is on a third party's trust list and may be viewing the same locked post, etc.)

* A user-facing killfile management page, where you can see everyone you've killfiled and what their *plonk* level is. (A *plonk*, for non-Usenetters, is the sound someone makes when they hit the bottom of your killfile.)

* Admin diagnostic tools: people with the appropriate privs can see someone else's killfile settings, to verify if display problems are killfile-related.

Interesting this! I just do not like the name really, maybe ignorefile or something would be less.. deadly? :)

We should come up with some way of building a contact-information type page, where people can fill out some kind of form (or make some kind of post, though that would probably be kludgy and hacky) and specify who they want to be able to read it (their trust list, a filter of their trust list, etc). Then, when someone needs contact info, they can just go to a separate page and get all the contact info that their friends have offered, without having to make a post about it.

That could be surprisingly useful. Right now people make "emergency contact" posts, but something like this would be even better -- maybe "emergency contact" could be added to/folded into this?

We want to make maintainer responsibilites in communities more finely grained so you can, for instance, assign someone to redo the community's style without giving them the power to take your community from you. You can read more about this here

We are looking into the possibility of adding community chatrooms into DWTalk, possibly as a paid community feature.

This is a tool that can automatically clean and format your IM logs for posting to Dreamwidth, complete with replacing screen names with user tags

I would love to see a tool that automatically refuses to post IM logs. Or maybe a killfile extension that collapsed and cut them automagically!

We're still figuring out the best way to approach this. There are currently two different possible methods, either or none of which will end up implemented:

* Opt in filters. That is, one of your access filters is public and people can opt themselves in or out of it, so you don't have to manage it.

We've ripped out the old to do list and are looking forward to replacing it with something better.

The menu structure on Dreamwidth has been organized by a card sort process, in the hopes it will be more usable.

I love the revised menus. After using LJ since 2002 (earlier for just reading) I still need the sitemap and even the FAQ search to find pages and features again, even ones that I've used before. That is just messed up, after using a site daily for years you shouldn't need to do that. Now DW is still new, but the orientation is already comfortable. (The only hard thing so far is to find out where to report which problem you noticed and whether it's already addressed, because there are so many places.)

And now I'm wondering -- is the thing where we get a mean, a median, and an SD on polls a new feature, or have LJ polls been doing that for years and I just never noticed?

LJ polls do it, but you have to use the scale question type.

I think it's worth bearing in mind with these polls that mostly you'll be getting the people who are already on Dreamwidth; those not on Dreamwidth will probably not bother to answer the poll, which means that you'll have an inherent bias.

But you almost certainly know this already; I just wanted to make it clear.

Oh, certainly. But, the poll is open to opinions from anybody if they so care to give them to us, which I think is about as good as I can make it. I guess I could submit this post to a place like Metafandom, but I don't know if that is their thing nor will it eliminate bias, as people who don't care (whether positively or negatively) are unlikely to wade through all of these questions to tell us so.

And people are free to spread this poll far and wide.

See, as I have a permanent account on LJ, as well as being an Adblock user, I didn't know about the ads over there. I simply never see them.

One thing I'd like, as a programmer, is the ability to upload PDF, Word, OpenDoccument, and text files as well as images. I like to be able to post source code in a downloadable format. I'm not sure that allowing us to upload executables is a good idea, at least for free users. Paid/permanent/seed users might be a bit more trustworthy.

Well, you may not see banner or text ads, but do you read

news? Their last post in it had an ad/sponsorship for a contest for a company called "Nature Made". I'm not pointing that out to say that you should necessarily care about that or hate it, since it's not as if it's flashy or possibly carrying malware, so much as to point out that it can be very difficult for LJ to effectively pursue advertising revenue beyond banner ads while still making sure paid/perm users don't see it, so some things slip through. Things along this line also include sponsored layouts, sponsored v-gifts, and sponsored mood themes--LJ has done them in the past and might do them in the future.

Another factor of ads is in the way it affects design and business decisions; this can affect the paid/permanent user experience as well, as features designed to encourage advertising and sponsorship revenue might be suboptimal if only considering user needs. This is another reason why people might dislike ads on a service, even if they never see them.
