Dreamwidth feature polls

The following polls are all about changes in technical features from LJ to Dreamwidth, divided by those available at open beta and those planned for later. If you don't have a Dreamwidth account feel free to sign in with a validated OpenID account and vote!

Because features carry pros and cons and not everyone likes them, each poll question rates them on a sliding scale: -5 means you absolutely detest the feature, -1 means you kind of dislike it, +1 means you kind of like it, zero means you're neutral, and +5 means you absolutely love it. (And, of course, there are in between options too.) If you don't know about a specific feature enough to vote on it, feel free to ask. Remember, you can change your mind on questions--edit your open beta feature answers or edit your planned feature answers!

Some of them are here. You can click on each quarter to see the bug list and then read through the bugs you're interested in. I find the bugs are fun to read because it's a case of "Really? It's going to do that? Really? Awesome!" a lot of the time.

I don't understand some of the planned features, so I'm going to wait to vote on that.

For Open Beta Features, I voted 0 for things I either didn't realize Dwdth was doing, or think that LJ is also doing.

"A description and comment field for icons" -- doesn't LJ already do that?

I think in this case the "description" is meant to be more accessibility-related, so that people utilizing screenreaders get more participation. It's separate from the "description" field on LJ, which must perforce include both description and comment.

(However, I am not an official DW person and am only going off half-remembered snips of conversation. I may very well be wrong.)

Doing the poll I can't help wishing there was a comm that had a post dedicated to each feature and we could just head there and discuss each feature to death.

I mean, for each of the poll choices, I partly wanted to go " I love X but I hope issue Y is addressed" or "Are there any plans for Z in regards to that feature?"

It might help sort out issues with the invite code system (since people who read up on the discussions for each feature and pitch in their own thoughts)

Friends split into access and subscribe

On LJ, friending is an atomic action. By friending someone you both subscribe to them and give them access to your protected content. While you can use filters to give access to only a subset of your friends, it's unwieldy to manage things that way.

DW has split friending into access and subscribe. You can subscribe to another user without giving them access to your locked content, and give access to a user without subscribing to them. You can still, of course, do both as well.

A side result of this split means that access filters and reading filters will be separate. You'll have 60 access filters and around 100 or so reading filters.

I totally dig this feature and gave it a well-deserved +5 :)
Do have one tiny question; the "You'll have 60 access filters and around 100 or so reading filters" does that mean I can only add 60 journals to my access and 100 journals to my reading filters / aka add them to my readlist, or is this amount for setting up extra filters (which I haven't done yet here on DW and haven't even looked into yet)?

Increased limits on posts and comments

Posts can be around 5x as long and comments can be around 4x as long than their counterparts on LJ.

LJ has a limit of 15 characters for usernames; on DW it is 25.

I have mixed feelings about that feature and (to a lesser extent) about the increased comment and entry length limits because of the incompatibility with LiveJournal. (Which would matter much less without the crossposting thingy, come to think of it. Hmm...)

Journal import, including comments and icons

Dreamwidth has the ability to import your journal from compatible LJ based services such as LiveJournal and InsaneJournal into your journal on Dreamwidth. The comments are included.

Some things can currently not be imported, and some might never be because of technical difficulties:

* ScrapBook pictures (we don't have photo hosting yet)
* Polls (no data export)
* Memories (no data export)

Built in cross posting

Dreamwidth can currently crosspost to LiveJournal, InsaneJournal, DeadJournal, JournalFen, and Inksome, as well as other LJ compatible services. There are options on whether to cross post by default and to disable comments on cross posts.

Dreamwidth does not have ads on its service. This means that all its revenue must come from its users.

Invite codes

Dreamwidth uses invite codes to control service growth and does not plan to remove them. This means that in order to get an account, someone either must find an invite code or pay for an account. This will also hinder the creation of spam bots.

Improved styles that are more customizable through CSS

The goal of styles on DW is to standardize classes across all styles, to make them easier to customize with CSS instead of S2, and to standardize features across styles by building more into the core to make them easy to include.

For more information about styles on DW, please see dw_styles. The styles team also has the goal of improving built in accessibility.

Cons to this for some include the death of the S1 system.

Google Analytics for paid users

Paid users on Dreamwidth will get to use Google Analytics on their journals. For advantages and disadvantages of this, see this post also on dreamwidth_meta.

Better integration with OpenID

OpenID users have many abilities on Dreamwidth. They can upload up to six icons, set a style for their reading page, and do most things on the service except post to their journals or communities.

OpenID users can subscribe to other users and be given access to other users' locked content.

Because some features depend on access (like restricting what information is shown on your profile) or subscription (like getting notified when an account has a new icon uploaded), users can subscribe to OpenID accounts and OpenID accounts can give other users access.

I'm a little bit unclear on what specifically is "better", as many if not all of the listed features can also be done on LJ, like uploading 6 icons, setting reading page style, and friending.

Revamped navigation strip

Dreamwidth has revamped the navigation strip to try and make it more useful.

It links to the light formatting of a post as well as lets you reload a page in your style. It links to your inbox and gives a count of new messages there. We added track user.

This is something that will continue to be worked on more in the months to come.

Whether or not to show the navigation strip is now a viewer choice. That is, as a viewer you can turn it off service wide or keep it on service wide.

I love this. Combined with the useful features on it, I can now choose to have it on everywhere regardless of the journal owner's settings, but people who don't like it don't need to see it on my journal.

All users able to create feed accounts

On LJ, only paid users can create feed accounts, but DW allows all users, paid and free, to create feed accounts.

All feed accounts have the postfix _feed to prevent confusion.

A description and comment field for icons

Icons on LJ only have a comment field. On DW, there are two fields. The comment field is for optional comments about the icon, useful for credit or sources. There is also a field for an optional description of the picture that will be displayed for people who can't view it, e.g. visually-impaired people using screen readers. Example: "Photo of me in the mirror, holding up camera."

i rated this feature as -3 in its current form because alt attributes are for providing a text equivalent, not a description. in many cases i think icons should have empty alt attributes, because frequently they don't convey any additional information that isn't already in the textual content of an entry or comment (e.g., poster's name for default icons, entry tags for topic icons). i would give this feature a positive rating if the field were renamed 'text equivalent' or something similar and displayed along with a link to guidelines for writing useful alt-text.

Respect post cuts in RSS feeds

By default, RSS feeds from Dreamwidth are set to the "cut" level. This means that if you put a cut in the post, the content you cut out does not appear in the RSS field. Previously, the only options were full, summary, and title.

As somebody who reads my friends posts via their authenticated RSS feeds, this REALLY SUCKS. I read using the RSS reader because I can see just the posts and have the accessibility set up just perfectly for me - to have to jump over to Dreamwidth to read anything under a cut tag nullifies the advantage of using the RSS reader for those posts.

I'm going to ask all the people whose journals I read to set their feeds to "full". I've ended up on LJ just not reading people's journals for the sole reason they'd set their feeds to something other than "full" and that made it too difficult to bother with. Some people are worth going out of my way for, but not everybody :(

I understand there's good reasons for this - denise explained it to me at least twice but I still can't remember. But as somebody who uses the authenticated RSS feeds, it SUCKS.

No word count limit on interests

The interest limit is 150 characters, with no word limit. LiveJournal has a four word limit on interests.
