Because snap.com had an ad revenue sharing program from the ads and sponsored links they put on their contextual pop ups.
To be honest I don't know if LJ ever opted in to that part of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the eventual goal. It has the tasty side effect of putting ads/sponsored links/sponsored searches in front of paid and permanent users, too, if they don't disable it.
