lassarina is right - instead of having a comment/description field we've split them up. Using your icon as an example:
On LJ: Keywords: air mail Comment: by me
When somebody who uses a screen reader or can't view images for another reason gets to your user icon their screen reader just says your display name, so it would just say "par_avion".
On DW: Keywords: air mail Description: Collage of "via air mail" stickers in different languages. (I just made this up BTW - you haven't entered one) Comment: by me
When somebody who uses a screen reader or can't view images for another reason gets to your user icon their screen reader says "Collage of "via air mail" stickers in different languages." and does whatever that screen reader does to indicate it's an image description, so the user knows what the icon looks like.
Most of the time this isn't 100% necessary but people often discuss icons in posts or comments and it's also just nice to have the atmosphere set with user icons whether you can actually view them or not.
Could I suggest, BTW, that you pop over to your own icon page and edit descriptions in for your icons? This nifty bit of assistive technology only works if the users put their actual descriptions in!
