Dreamwidth feature polls

The following polls are all about changes in technical features from LJ to Dreamwidth, divided by those available at open beta and those planned for later. If you don't have a Dreamwidth account feel free to sign in with a validated OpenID account and vote!

Because features carry pros and cons and not everyone likes them, each poll question rates them on a sliding scale: -5 means you absolutely detest the feature, -1 means you kind of dislike it, +1 means you kind of like it, zero means you're neutral, and +5 means you absolutely love it. (And, of course, there are in between options too.) If you don't know about a specific feature enough to vote on it, feel free to ask. Remember, you can change your mind on questions--edit your open beta feature answers or edit your planned feature answers!

Spread this around all you like! You can vote in it no matter what you feel about Dreamwidth.

For more information about a feature, or to discuss your feelings about it, please see the following top level comments in this post:

I am kind of skeptical of killfiles, TBH. The idea is good in theory, but I've seen forums where the existence of killfiles basically removes all incentive for self-modding - making the trolls and idiots invisible is a lot less trouble than making them *stop* being trolls and idiots.

And the result is that when new people come to the community, all they see is the trolls roaming unchecked, and they get turned off. It *might* work better on LJ, because people moderate their own spaces instead of depending on weight of numbers, but I would want to specify that option #2 only works on journals and communities you don't control (though possibly with an option to also ban_set in your own spaces.)

The only thing better than this would be this plus a coding wizard that would let me swap out all my links to photobucket with links to the same photos hosted here.

But, the idea that I may one day be able to stop forking money over to photobucket and just pay you guys more, that makes me very happy ;-)

I'm a little worried about this. Remember the whole LoudTwitter thing on the dw_discuss list?

Re: Better integration with OpenID

[personal profile] jd 2009-04-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
That's probably true. Part of that is that it's only really documented in the FAQs, and although the other docadmins and I have worked on trying to make the OpenID docs more readable/usable, it's difficult work :) That and it's real hard to get site text on LJ changed. Sigh.

Also, I think it would be more of a big deal if LJ were ever to back to invite codes. Since the codes for real journals on DW are very limited, but OpenID has always been available, it means there's a huge demand for people to use OpenID on DW, and there's more information about there. Yeah, LJ doesn't do much for OpenID, but nowhere near as many people use it on LJ in comparison. Whether this is causation or correlation is an exercise left to the reader.

I like this - I like also having the option to give a full or cut feed. That's an upcoming feature?

At least part of it was the very impersonal text that was generated, with no way to customize. I saw a lot of people saying things like "if you want me to update my journal, you should tell me directly, not send out an email that seems automatically generated" when it came out.

+1

I couldn't stand that thing. I was so glad when I found the option to turn it off. Here - gone, gone, gone!

Thank you so much devs!

This sounds fantastic. I hadn't even thought about how cool an automatic "archive page" could be, but I'd love this feature.

Can you tell I'm just tired of a). maintaining my website and b). trying to find series/etc in people's LJs via tag? ;)

That could be surprisingly useful. Right now people make "emergency contact" posts, but something like this would be even better -- maybe "emergency contact" could be added to/folded into this?

This sounds handy, but I have to admit I've never found myself thinking "Oh, I'd post this log file if only it were easier to format!"

I would love if there was an option to just see to the public posts on your readinglist when you subscribe to someone even if they have granted you access to more.

On LJ I've had it happen several times that I friended an LJ based on the public posts, which were for example all fandom stuff and not too high frequency, then I got friended back and also saw their thrice daily posts that were really personal (like about mental probles, personal and financial drama, all the stuff many people commonly lock), which is of course normal content for a journal, but sometimes these are things I just don't deal well with on my f-list that I want mostly for recreational reading. So then the only way to fix this for me is to unfriend them, or filter them out of my default reading filter, even though I want to follow their public posts. (I could ask them to just remove me, but those are really awkward conversations to have, especially if I don't actually know them, also in some instances they might have wanted to read my entries when they friended me back rather than just being nice.)

And I could see the same happening with the WTF system here, because some people might grant access to me, even if I just subscribe to them.

Re: Removal of nudge

[personal profile] torachan 2009-04-22 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't hate it, because I never saw anyone use it, but in theory it's pretty obnoxious and presumptuous. I mean, srsly, it is no one's business how often I do or don't update my journal, and certainly no one's place to tell me I must do so because they have decided I don't post enough. (Not that I would ever be subject to a nudge anyway, since I post daily, but jeez. A lot of people on my flist go for months or more without posting and it would never occur to me to tell them to do otherwise.)

I suspect, though, that people who can't manage to tag their fics well, will also be people who don't make good use of the archive function. :p

I've gotten used to totally ignoring the inbox on LJ. It had not occurred to me until now that I could have some things go there and not to my email. I'm still not sure exactly how useful that would be, though...

From what I've heard from friends, it's mostly useful for people using journals for roleplaying games. If you RP outside of DW over an instant-messaging service but want to post the log to the game, this would make it easier to do.

Hmmm, interesting. I'd love to see how many views each image gets (one thing that bugs me about Scrapbook on LJ, I have no idea if people are browsing my galleries, or only see what I post), and it'd be nice if it was easier to post multiple images at a time (it bugs me that I have to go Insert Image -> from gallery -> pick the gallery -> pick the image, then repeat, especially if they're all from the same gallery ... errr, my image posting style may be non-typical, though :-) ).

(on the other hand, I have over 800 images (1Gb worth) on Scrapbook, and probably won't move them off there - not least because it would break all the old image links from my posts ... )
